Documentary: Afro-Brazilians Connect with African Ancestry

As the awakening of the children of the African diaspora increases, people from all over the world have been seeking to reconnecti with their ancestral pasts embedded within the African continent.

Brazil: DNA Africa is a series of five investagative documentaries spotlighting the origins of Afro-Brazilians while highlighting the importance of Africans in the construction of Brazil. The series will show how the arrival of millions of Africans over the centuries had a strong influence on the arts, religion, cuisine and the formation of the Brazilian people.

The filmmakers take the audience on a journey throughout the past to the present of African Brazilians. Historical data on the slave trade and the number of Africans brought as slaves are an estimated 4.8 million. The filmmakers and researchers also identified the main ports of departure and arrival used by European settlers in Africa and Brazil.

DNA tests were performed on 150 African descendants of five Brazilian states in 1997. In 2011, the film premiered at the Associação Paulista de Críticos de Arte in Sao Paolo, Brazil. This captivating, cinematic work of houses a soulful depth in its efforts to rescue the lost narrative of Afro-Brazilain people previously lost to centuries long human trafficking and identifying the ethnic origins of participants, further strengthening bonds with African ancestry.
